volvos and vulvas
so anyway, we watched the tattoo movie on weekend. lemme start by saying that michael nyquvist seems to be everywhere. spose I shouldn't have been surprised he'd be in this. anyway ... good, thinky entertainment in whodunnit style. wandered into "midsommer murders" territory at times - which had a flattening effect. the eponymous girl was spectacularly good in the grouchy overgrown teen role. wasn't impressed with the lightening visit to a cartoon-like australia (complete with architypes) to retrieve a sun-blasted hatty - it seemed a cheap shot. was disappointed there wasn't more of the initial backstory told, but other than those minor concerns I enjoyed meself. 7/10.
not dissimilar to some other swedenborg enterprises that momentarily spring to mind -
"as it is in heaven" contains michael nyquvist (obviously) as the dying conductor/composer/choirmaster snaring, inexplicably, the youngest and prettiest girl in town - who happens to also be the town bike with a heart of gold (naturally). also, whirling dirvishes, the power of song, insufficient firewood, a special needs boy, and snow. I make it sound awful but this is a Very Special Film, make no mistake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y765gdd3rEc
"let the right one in" contains 13 year old vampires, michael nyquvist (probably), incredibly performances, and snow. one of the best flicks, and certainly THE best vampire flick, I've had the pleasure to see. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZJUgsZ56vQ
"my life as a dog" okay, I know this one is over 25 years old, but still! contains michael nyquvist (maybe), a dog, a bountiful milkmaid, and snow. divine, beautiful, gorjus movie. the youtubes are old and cruddy, but there are a few there.
really, those swedes crank out some of the best stuff around. and they have a lot of snow :D

Prego, signora.
ReplyDelete'As it is in Heaven' is certainement a beautiful fillum, think we actually have a permanent copy of it here somewheres. Kind of like a really good musical swedish take on the 'ex professional footballer coaches the kids from the hood to a premiership' kind of theme...but good, but good.
Glad you enjoyed Froken Salander and her tatts.
Missing back stories?
THE BOOK IS BETTER!!!
ps oh yes, and the swedes are bluddy good filmmakers, even tho Nykvist is as prevalent as Sigrid Thornton in an Aus period miniseries or Marina Prior in a Melbourne musical. Shuddering to see what happens now the yanks have their hands on it.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm glad you enjoyed it regardless of reading the background notes. Will you see dos & tres?
ReplyDeleteI'm rather looking forward to the American offering - so we can shred it to tatters. Yeehaw!
gutt morganswedes :D
ReplyDeletebackstory, yes. the 'set-up' of blomsqvist etc. the one dragon girl relieved him of at the end. as it were. seemed all important at the outset, but was obviously just the link betwixt he and her. never mind, I just like backstories.
not sure on #s 2 and 3. though having said that, I'm sure I'll be snaffling them the minute they hit the "new to weekly" shelf :p
poor michael, being likened to siggers ... but you're right, he's wearing a little thin. that pock-marked and quirkily attractive face will become the kiss of death at some point.
oh yeah, pleased to hear you dig "as it is upstairs". I have a copy here, too - gifted by someone who claims it's their favourite flick ever and wanted to share the love. I'd quite like a copy of "let the right one in" but I'd be worried about keeping it where smaller peeps might get hold of it. it's not for tender minds ...
