"Still Hungry for Caged Eggs?" Ad Campaign - Supermarket
Edited to say: yes, it matters. Battery hens/caged hens should be illegal. It's hypocritical of us to be getting all antsy at Indonesia's treatment of our live exports. Our treatment of animals in this country is inhumane and I feel sad that people are desensitised to it.
...I only eat free range chook and mainly free range red meat as well. It matters, my friends. if you youtube you'll find plenty of horrific footage of cage hens here in Australia. I've posted the least stomach churning....
I buy the free range eggs, but as I'm paying out the extra $2, I wonder if the conditions on these farms are any better. Still, it sends a message to the producers that consumers are willing to pay a little extra to make a difference.
the conditions are better. they have a code they bneed to adhere to. From what my free range butcher tells me, it is true that some free range eggs and chickens are less free range than others...some brands do the bare minimum required to gain the free range stamp, and others do a lot. I hear the Glenloth chooks have the highest quality life...and the chooks and eggs are correspondingly the most eggspensive (sorry, couldnt resist). There's still a substantial improvement in quality of life for a free ranging chook from a farm doing the bare minimum, and a caged hen.
