Hunger Games Trilogy (books)

Betty, I think you had a review of this somewhere on this blog but I'm too lazy to scroll back and find it. Heres what I thought: A beautiful tragedy set in a futuristic dystopia with characters who I cared about, and who have stayed with me. I struggled to finish the third book, partly because the battle in the Capitol was so unrelievedly unpleasant, partly because I was so attached to the characters that I was afraid of turning the pages and finding who lived and who dies, and partly because I didn't want the series to end. Intense themes for a trilogy aimed at older adolescents and young adults. Lots to talk about with your children. Disturbing that the movie is being promoted as ' The New Harry Potter'. More like 'The New Lord of the Flies meets Brave New World'. This material is completely inappropriate for younger kids. I know of grade 6 kids, eg 11 year olds, at one of our local primary schools who are hassling their parents to take them over the school holidays. Nope. not on. I look forward to seeing the movie soon....glad Suzanne Collins is around to write for us again Ps....will go find Bets review now....

epic

watched this one last night.  superbly done friendship piece that takes you on an unexpected and completely involving ride.  within minutes you're glassy eyed and in movie-goers' trance, not realising you've haven't changed positions for the past hour until your legs start aching.  be warned, it's loooooong.  again, though, you don't realise how long until it's over and you're suffering from extended sittage :p.  having said that, there are several moments I absolutely hated, but in the broad sweep of the thing I suppose they don't matter.

tears, laughs, all the usual suspects.  a big-chillesque (and it is HIGHLY derivitive of that wonderful flick - though at the same time entirely different) and deeply satisfying romp through and around the human condition.

a recent $1 excursion

this trailer gives a false sense of security not backed up by it's rating.  looks all Young Adult Romance and High Times, right?  wrong.  it's some of that but so very much more.  pretentiously arthouse, it could be said, but also weightier than this flaccid trailer implies.  not sure whether I enjoyed it or just watched it as a piece of so-so art.  hard to spot the diff, sometimes.  footnote, the trailer conveniently omits to reveal the true and hard fought for object of the heroes affections.  that'll be your R rating ;)

finally took this one home!

light as a summer breeze, but enjoyed it nevertheless.especially loved the first scenes of Gil in the 20's, meeting his heroes :D

funniest bit, aside from the snorffling at the Tosser Friend, was where and when the private detective ended up.  GUARDE! GUARDE! hehehe

dental hygeine and early man

picked this one up on a whim at one buck wednesday this week, and was pleasantly surprised.  had me glued for the duration.  some slightly silly moments (polar bears) but otherwise a mesmerising look into the deep past - thankfully portrayed as accurately as current archeology and anthropology allows.  some very dirty sex and a fair bit of clubbing and other stone aged misadventure, so don't watch with tenders.

was quietly tickled at the thought of the painted (and most brutal) people being ancestors of the fronchies :p

THE BEST THING ABOUT A FLAT TYRE ON A MONDAY MORNING IS.....

...Surrendering to it! 40-70 minutes before RACV rock up, we're told. Kids have put Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer on top celebrate & Kid A doent have to go sing the National Anthem at assembly. Happy Monday all.

Oh Queensland

Sigh. I liked Anna. Granted, I dont live there. But her 'we are Queenslanders' schtick was orright. And more importantly she wasnt an Abbot lover Crikey, Qlnders. Youve even handed Bob 'mad as batshit' Katter another seat, I think. Not that we can talk. Fancy voting out Brumby for Ballieau. Hummph

friday

I've posted one of their tamer vids, for the sake of the youngens.  Hate 'em or love 'em, they're compelling.  I adore them :D
the twin banter and bickering, the wry humour twinkling in the background always, and, let's be honest .. they are seriously dishy :p

some of their funnier vids are any on obesity, anti-gay christians, mcdonalds, and idiot celebrities.

KONY 2012

Yes, it's an oversimplification of the issues. Yes, the folk who made it are possibly christian and they spend a lot of their money raised from donors on their films and travel etc. You prolly still should watch it & its good to have it here, I think. And I cried.

Forum Review: My Kitchen Rules

Idol or SYTYCD it aint.
Very little moderation.
Level of conversation mainly around the level of 'I rooly like their food...no, I rooly dont'. Quite a bit of hate stuff, too. Yucko
I began a thread titled 'Why wont Manu marry me'. Someone scolded me for being silly.
Very little moderation means lots of nutbars. Could be promising on this front alone. Keep an eye out for The Pigman.

High Points of the last year:

- Blogging. Being able to ramble on ad infinitum. So anti Twitter in all its haiku like brevity
- Being able to moderate and edit ones own posts.
- chucking clips on! Extra mention to Betty for The Fooeys and Darthy for Viggo. Ok, Viggo hasnt been in a clip that I recall. Homework for Darthy.
- Meeting Betty and discovering that she is in fact real and gorgeous. My daughter is still playing dressups with your daughters spangly frocks :)
......feel free to add on

Our Birfday, is it?

Congrats all round!xxxxx
Moments silence for those lost and awol along the way......
Lets look back. Any regrets?
We could always still invite old ferny. Just had a quick flick over to ten forums and she's still carrying her spear up the hill over there. Edit: Just kidding.
Wish we could entice Coldy. I managed to evoke a 'hullo, how are you' from him over at his deviant art site about a month ago, but he says he's been busy and so far he's been a no show.
Hey darthy, I've sent you 2 emails to your new email addy so far and no reply. I dont mind if you're ignoring me (much) but I hope you got them anyways.
For some reason I have it in my head that there's some seriously good theories about the disappearance of SHS that I'm waiting to share via email with anyone with a workable email addy. You too, Betty. And BIQ.
Hey, Jonesy! You still around?

a little friday sunshine

and not just for the funky sounds and awesome jitterbugging (ahhh ... memories!). just check out the gorgeous and sublimely flattering cut of all those skirts!

snicker

if you can spare 3 minutes .... check out that mamas & papas vid, and watch closely this time.  keep in mind that michelle (the gorjus one) was married to john (the tall one playing guitar) at the time, but was secretly shagging dennis (the thin lipped and bog ordinary yet inexplicably sexy singer).  is she not INCREDIBLY obvious?

such rascals :D

Lemons

Topic of the week is LEMONS?? The first thing that comes to mind is "When life hands you lemons, find the salt and tequila and have yourself a drink"

on a brighter note

one of my very favourite bands, singing one of my favourites of theirs. such groovy geeksters, these kids. adore denny doherty's vocal stylings ... no wonder michelle buggered off with him :p

RIP Davey
