Canberra National Folk Festival 2012 top bits & bottom bits

Top Bits: The Amazing Drumming Monkeys: If Flight of the Conchordes ever put a kids show together, this'd be it. Weeeeeeeeee. Watch 2 dudes in half monkey suits with djembes try to flip a froggy beanbag int a fake pond. And miss. Over and over. Loved them - Liz Frencham and Fred Smith: they're kind of like king and queen of the prom except much much cooler, when it comes to folk festivals. Love their songwriting and Liz Frencham has the best smile in the world. - Shooglenifty: Ten years on from when I first fell for this band, Angus looks sober. But hey, he's still alive. And he's still a violin god. My daughter turned to me during their set and said 'Mum, this is the best music of my LIFE'. And danced wildly. - Mick Conway: Is a nutter - Katie Noonan: Is a goddess - Peter Coombe: did a set at 9.30 Sunday night, and the place was full of twenty- somethings singing and dancing to their fave kids artist. Very cute. - Everything at a tent called Shrumpy: great mulled wine, great company and loads of irish music. Wish I was still there. - Bottom Bits: - The Troubadour tent is no more. Pity. I like a bit o tradition at the National....think there was some kind of politiking. - My BLUDDY kids wanted to go to the creche in the middle of the day 'but darling, dont you want to build a lagerphone with me?' 'Nah. I want to watch Wallis and Grommit'. 'But sweetheart, you can do that at home' 'yeah, but they've got it HERE too!...' - My 7 hour train trip home with 2 kids from Canberra to Melbourne (I'm insane....evolved into a 9 hour train trip. Yes, I got on a train in Yass at 12.30pm and arrived around 9.30 pm. Without husband. Manoman. - And a distinct lack of the Famille Darthsideous was a downer.....what happened?

  1. Sounds exciting, exhilarating, & exhaustipating! Motherhood: It's knowing you'll have a better time if you just do what your kids want to do, and give up on doing what YOU want to do.

  2. Never a truer word spoken Betts...most exhausting part was the train trips. Next year I shall REFUSE to try to save money and we shall travel first class on Emirates to wherever we are going. last year we went Tiger and the flight went bell up. this year we went train and we had 2 hours delay either side..

  3. ahoy there, folksters!

great reportage, trainspottywilms, and it's troooo that darthnation was conspicuously absentia, continentia :(

we were all set to go down for the day on saturday, and some malfesceance took hold of our cobbled together plan and shook it hard. THEN I couldn't get near this contraption for the next two flippin weeks on account of kids being sufficiently growed up to hog computer round the clock :(

it was all such a disappointment, wilms. I was actually in tears when we couldn't go :( :(

  4. well, we missed you. Place wasnt the same without you. We could have built lagerphones together and worked out who was selling the strongest mulled wine.
